The
French American Book Fund was launched in 2006 to respond
to a situation endemic to the French and American book markets:
although they are both dynamic and prosperous, the channels
for translation between the two countries are highly imbalanced.
American fiction translated and published in France represents
two-thirds of all foreign language fiction translated and
published annually. French fiction and non-fiction translated
and published in the United States represent 0.8% of all books
published annually in the US.
This general situation calls attention to two points:
• Published translations of French books published
remain in the first position with 0.8% of a total of 2.8%
of all books published in the US.
• Published translations of American fiction in France
dominates, whereas works of non-fiction published by American
university presses are, for the most part, in a considerably
weaker market position.
