From July 10th through 20th, 25 students from six different
New York public schools participated in the second edition
of our Summer Camp. Like in 2006, this intensive program featured
cultural, tolerance and freedom-oriented projects that allowed
for a thorough use of their language skills as well as their
creativity and knowledge.
A wide range of activities included a liberation painting
workshop, an artist-guided visit to the Museum of Contemporary
African Diaspora Arts (MoCADA), an afternoon meeting with
the Ambassador of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie,
a freedom writing workshop, discussions on cross-cultural
issues with Francophone Fulbright students from Metro International
(http://www.metrointl.org/index.html),
and visits to the Statue of Liberty, the Museum of Immigration
and the United Nations. More recreative activities included
a Haitian dance workshop and a Scrabble competition. On Sunday,
July 15th, the students also contributed their own booth to
the French Institute-Alliance Française's Bastille
Day, held yearly on the occasion of France's National Day.
There, they could speak to hundreds of French speakers and
Francophile visitors, and tell them who they were and display
their paintings.
This year, the summer camp was hosted by Medgar Evers College
Preparatory High School and our students came from the following
schools :
- Medgar Evers College Preparatory High School (Brooklyn)
- Brooklyn International High School
- International High School at Prospect Heights (Brooklyn)
- International High School at Kingsborough Community College
