More than 60 students, from elementary to high school levels, took part in the 2012 edition of our summer camps in New York and Florida, from June 8th to July 27th.

In New York, 19 disadvantaged French-speaking high school students from the Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn had chance to discover a Francophone country here in America by going to Quebec from July 2nd -12th. Our participants came from Senegal, Benin, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Tunisia and the Congo. Activities included the Global Forum of the French language organized by the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), cultural and historical museum visits, guided tours of Montreal and Quebec City, the Assemblée Nationale du Quebec, French music concerts, and visits of major universities. In keeping with our mission to provide French instruction and the opportunity to discover new francophone cultures, our camp included a portfolio allowing for daily French language activities relating to the major visits at camp. The cost of this educational trip was capped at $150 per student in order to respond to the financial capacities of our population (we also thank some of our partner schools for paying for their students’ contributions).

In Florida, 43 younger students were able to attend the summer camp for up to 7 weeks at the Little Haiti Cultural Center and Toussaint Louverture Elementary School, at the heart of the Little Haiti neighborhood of Miami. Among the many all-day activities offered at camp, students learnt about the diversity of French-speaking cultures through singing, dancing, and creative writing. On the final day of the camp, children exhibited their work at the “marché au monde” room in the Little Haiti Cultural Center and concluded the day with a first-rate stage performance involving dance and poetry.
