Type of Partnership: Shared Master Program
This partnership consists in faculty exchanges (for both teaching and research purposes) and reciprocal student research internships.
A large array of jointly new courses has been accredited at both institutions since the lauching of the program. The partner institutions have developed distance learning and videoconferencing technology in order to make courses at both institutions available to all students. To make this partnership sustainable in the long term, additional sources of funding have been sought and obtained by the partners, from institutions such as the National Science Foundation, environmental consulting firms or regional governments.

Building on the preexisting contacts between the two departments of history, this partnership has unfolded in the fields of Science of Education and Linguistics. It allows faculty and graduate students to respectively teach and take courses at each other’s institution, within the participating Master’s or research programs. Distance learning technologies, videoconferencing in particular have been mobilized to that end. Participating students have through this collaboration earned course credit equivalent to up to a semester’s or a year’s course load in their home program. Master’s theses have also been co-directed allowing for a truly international master’s program.

The Cornell University College of Engineering and Ecole Centrale Paris (ECP) have developed an innovative dual degree program. The 2-2-1 program allows students to spend their two first years at their home institution, the next two at the partner school before coming back to their home institution for the fifth year. They receive the Diplome d’Ingenieur from ECP and the BS and MEng degrees from Cornell. Students willing to spend a shoter time abroad can spend a summer or semester at the other partner university working in a faculty member’s research lab. To make this agreement sustainable, faculty exchange has been facilitated.

After a long period of association through research projects and educational programs focused on undergraduate level, these universities have decided to launch a global education and training platform focused on graduate students and joint doctoral supervision. In order to deepen the partnership, some classes on each side have been reciprocally recognized and credited. Other institutions such as Université de la Mediterranée or Clemson University are integrating this partnership so as to strengthen the network in the field of polymer. Additional laboratories are discussing ways to be associated to the program.

Applied Maths for Finance

This dual Master’s degree is the fruit of several years of collaboration between these institutions through the Alliance Program. Students spend the first year of their Master’s program at their home university and the second one at the partner university. They obtainboth the MA in Mathematics Applied to Finance at Columbia University and the Master’s Degree in Science and Technology in Applied Mathematics (with specialization in probabilities) at Ecole Polytechnique. Additionnally, both institutions have developed internship opportunities for students and built stronger contacts with recruiters in order to assist students in building their future career.

Electronic Music and Applied Multimedia Art

This partnership was launched through a visit of SAIC faculty to Aix aimed at exploring the multimedia projects and common ground between the two institutions. Fourth-year students from each side spend a four-month stint at the partner university, in particular in Digital Multimedia. Students are closely followed while abroad sending weekly reports via email to their tutors and blogs to the school website. There has been interactive video-conferences on the occasion of festivals and are expected to take a greater part of the project.

Musical and Electro-acoustic composition

Both partners have been highly committed in this agreement. Firstly a university Diploma was created in “Instrumental Composition, Electroacoustic and New Technology”. During the student exchange, a musical piece created by the French and the US students was included respectively in the program of the Berkeley New Music Project concert and in the one of the Manca Festival in Nice. Both institutions have tried to integrate the students in some professional activities such as the organization of a concert in Paris for the European project “Ensemble Aleph”. For the next step, the partners envision to create a joint professional Master’s diploma.
