“She
(Charlotte Gainsbourg) is once again Yvan Attal’s
biggest asset, a center of composed sensuality and wounded
grace in evoking the simmering despair of a woman who’s
figured out that her husband is cheating on her.”

As he did
in My Wife is an Actress, Yvan Attal takes a close look at
marriage and the daily lives of couples in his second feature
film. Vincent and Georges, both in their early forties, are
married with small children. They complain about the constraints
that marriage and family impose on their lives and envy their
single friend, Fred, who succeeds in sleeping with many beautiful
women. Fred ultimately desires what Vincent and Georges have:
to settle down with a life-long companion and start a family.
Vincent, known for his fidelity, is in fact seeing another
woman, keeping the affair secret from everyone. However, his
wife Gabrielle is well aware of Vincent’s cheating,
but hopes, despite her pain, that everything will work out.
When she meets a handsome stranger in a music store she realizes
that she, too, can be attracted to someone else. In the end,
Fred is the only one to undergo a complete change of lifestyle.
He has a child with one of his conquests. Once he settles
down, however, he faces the same fears and frustrations as
his married friends. In Happily Ever After, Yvan Attal does
not judge his characters, nor does he give answers to their
questions. Rather, he observes the couples’ lives, their
moments of happiness together, their frustrations, fears and
their ultimate quest for happiness.
